NZ GST Due Dates 2026-27

Every GST return and payment due date for the 2026-27 tax year, by filing frequency — monthly, 2-monthly and 6-monthly. Covers the standard 28th-of-the-month rule, the two statutory exceptions, IRD's weekend/public holiday shift rule, who must file how often, and what a late return or payment costs.

Next GST due date (monthly and 2-monthly filers)

28 August 2026

Monthly filers: July 2026 period. 2-monthly filers: June–July 2026 period. 6-monthly filers' next due date is 28 October 2026 (April–September 2026 period).

The standard rule and the two exceptions

Your GST return and payment are due on the same day: the 28th of the month after your taxable period ends. A period ending 30 June, for example, is due 28 July.

Two statutory exceptions push the due date later, to give filers extra time over the summer break and the income-tax year-end:

  • A period ending 30 November is due 15 January, not 28 December.
  • A period ending 31 March is due 7 May, not 28 April.

You cannot get an extension of time to file a GST return — unlike income tax returns filed through a tax agent — so these dates are fixed. Work out exactly what's owing with the GST calculator.

Monthly filer — every due date, July 2026 to June 2027

Monthly filing is compulsory once turnover reaches $24,000,000, and optional for any business that wants smoother cashflow (useful if you regularly claim GST refunds).

2-monthly filer — every due date, 2026-27 cycle

2-monthly is IRD's default filing frequency and the most common choice — 6 returns a year.

6-monthly filer — every due date, 2026-27 cycle

Who files how often

Filing frequency is set by your annual taxable turnover, and you can always choose a more frequent option than your turnover requires:

  • Monthly — compulsory once turnover reaches $24,000,000 in any 12-month period.
  • 2-monthly — the default for turnover between $500,000 and $24,000,000, and the most common choice overall.
  • 6-monthly — available if turnover is at or under $500,000.

Registration itself is compulsory once turnover reaches $60,000 — a separate threshold from the filing-frequency bands above. Check where you land, and whether voluntary registration makes sense below that threshold, with the GST calculator. To change your filing frequency, apply through myIR — IRD generally applies the change from the start of your next taxable period.

If you miss a GST due date

A late GST return draws a flat late filing penalty — $50 if you're on the payments basis, $250 if you're on the invoice or hybrid basis — separate from any penalty on late payment.

Late payment adds 1% of the unpaid GST the day after the due date, then a further 4% of what's still owing at the end of the 7th day after that. Unlike some older tax debt, GST does not carry the incremental 1%-a-month penalty on top of those two stages. Use-of-money interest also accrues daily on the outstanding balance — see every published rate on the IRD UOMI interest rates page.

Pay what you can by the due date to limit both charges, and contact IRD before the due date if you genuinely can't pay in full — an instalment arrangement can stop some penalties accruing further. IRD accepts payment by internet banking, direct debit or card in myIR, and a few other methods — see the IRD ways of paying page for the full list.

Frequently asked questions

When is my GST return and payment due?

The standard rule is the 28th of the month after your taxable period ends — return and payment are due the same day. There are two statutory exceptions: a period ending 30 November is due 15 January instead of 28 December, and a period ending 31 March is due 7 May instead of 28 April.

What are the GST due dates for 2026-27?

For a monthly filer, the next due date is 28 August 2026 (July 2026 period). For a 2-monthly filer, the same date applies to the June–July 2026 period. For a 6-monthly filer, the next due date is 28 October 2026 (April–September 2026 period). See the full 12-month tables below for every frequency.

How often do I have to file GST?

Filing frequency depends on your annual taxable turnover. Turnover of $24,000,000 or more makes monthly filing compulsory. Turnover at or under $500,000 can elect 6-monthly filing. Most businesses in between file 2-monthly, which is IRD's default. You can also choose a more frequent option than your turnover requires.

What happens if I file or pay GST late?

A late GST return attracts a late filing penalty of $50 on the payments basis or $250 on the invoice or hybrid basis. Late payment adds a further 1% the day after the due date and another 4% at the end of the 7th day after that — GST does not carry the older incremental 1%-a-month penalty. Use-of-money interest also accrues daily on the unpaid balance.

Do I have to register for GST?

Registration is compulsory once your taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period reaches or is expected to reach $60,000. You can also register voluntarily below that threshold.

What if a GST due date falls on a weekend or public holiday?

IRD moves the due date to the next working day. If that next day is also a weekend or public holiday — as happens with the 28 March 2027 monthly due date, a Sunday immediately followed by Easter Monday — the due date moves again, to the next working day after that.
