Scope
NZTaxTools publishes educational tax calculators, PAYE references, and explanatory articles for New Zealand taxpayers. Content is written for general informational use and does not replace individualized tax advice.
Source hierarchy
- Inland Revenue (IRD) publications, forms, and guidance.
- Ministry of Social Development (MSD / Work and Income) for benefit and supplement rates.
- The Treasury and Budget documents for announced changes.
- Enacted legislation, such as the Income Tax Act 2007, when thresholds or rules change.
Review cadence
Reviews follow the NZ tax calendar rather than an arbitrary schedule:
- 1 April (tax-year start) — every year-indexed rate and threshold (PAYE brackets, ACC earner's levy, student loan, Working for Families, KiwiSaver settings) rolls to the new tax year.
- Budget day — announced changes are applied when confirmed. Budget 2026 rate changes (Working for Families, KiwiSaver, donation credits) were live the same day they were announced (28 May 2026).
- Quarterly — administrative rates that move between years (use-of-money interest, FBT prescribed rate) are re-checked against IRD's published tables.
- Annually — foreign tax brackets on country-comparison pages (June sweep) and the IRD-approved Australian share list behind FIF pages (April sweep) are re-verified; each entry records its source URL and the date it was last verified.
- Event-driven — legislative changes (for example the bright-line test reset from 1 July 2024, or the 1 December 2025 LVR easing) are applied when they take effect, not at the next scheduled pass.
In July 2026 we additionally completed a full-site accuracy review: every calculator, reference page, and article was re-checked against primary sources.
Calculator maintenance
- Tax rates, thresholds, and formulas are encoded once in central data files, so a single verified update flows through every calculator and page that uses the figure.
- Calculation logic is covered by an automated test suite (currently over 1,500 tests, including anchor tests that fail loudly if a published rate is changed accidentally). The full suite runs before any change is published.
- Every build also verifies internal links sitewide before deploying.
- Time-sensitive pages display the tax year they cover and a "Last updated" date generated from the page's revision history, falling back to the build date where no history is available.
- Major assumptions are summarized on the page and linked to source material where practical.
See the methodology page for how calculations are structured and how ambiguous rules are handled.
Content updates and corrections
We revise pages when official tax brackets, ACC levies, benefit rates, deadlines, or IRD administrative guidance change. If a factual issue is reported, we review the underlying source and update the page when needed.
Editorial independence
Rankings, calculator outputs, and article conclusions are based on our reading of official materials and published assumptions, not sponsored placements or advertiser input.
