myIR is Inland Revenue’s secure online account for managing your New Zealand tax — filing returns, checking your tax code, seeing refunds, and updating your details. This is a plain-English guide to logging in, including what to do when a password or username won’t work.
This is an independent guide, not the Inland Revenue login page. NZTaxTools is not affiliated with Inland Revenue or the New Zealand Government. To actually log in, go to the official site: ird.govt.nz and select “Log in to myIR” at the top right. Never enter your myIR password on any site other than ird.govt.nz.
How to Log In to myIR
- Go to ird.govt.nz and select “Log in to myIR” (top right of the page).
- Enter your myIR username — the one you chose when you registered. It is not your IRD number.
- Enter your password — it’s case-sensitive.
- Complete two-step verification if prompted — enter the code Inland Revenue texts or emails you.
- You’re in — use your dashboard to file returns, check your tax code, and view refunds.
Forgot Your myIR Password or Username?
On the login screen, select “Forgot your password?” or “Forgot your username?”. Inland Revenue will verify your identity — usually with your IRD number and a code sent to your registered email or phone — and let you reset it. If your contact details are out of date, you may need to call Inland Revenue on 0800 227 774 to regain access.
myIR Account Locked?
myIR temporarily locks after several failed login attempts to protect your account. Wait and try again later, or reset your password using the “Forgot your password?” link. If it stays locked, contact Inland Revenue directly.
Don’t Have a myIR Account Yet?
You can register for myIR from the same login page — select “Register”. You’ll need your IRD number and an email address. If you don’t yet have an IRD number, see our IRD number application guide first.
Watch Out for myIR Scams
Inland Revenue will never email or text you a link asking you to “log in to myIR” to claim a refund or verify your account. Those links go to fake sites that steal your password. Always reach myIR by typing ird.govt.nz yourself. If in doubt, see Inland Revenue’s guidance on scams.
While You’re Sorting Your Tax
Logging in to myIR is often the first step in a bigger job — checking a refund, confirming your take-home pay, or making sure you’re on the right tax code. These free calculators do the maths before you file:
- PAYE calculator — your take-home pay after PAYE, ACC and student loan, by pay period.
- Income tax calculator — tax owed across the IRD brackets for the year.
- Tax code checker — confirm you’re on the right tax code (M, ME, SL and secondary codes) before you update it in myIR.
