How to Log In to myIR

myIR is the online portal run by Inland Revenue (IRD) where you manage your tax account, file returns, check refunds, update your tax code, and more. This page walks you through how to find and log in to your myIR account, what to do when you can't log in, and which free calculators to use alongside myIR to check your numbers before or after you sign in.

Where to log in to myIR

The official myIR login page is at ird.govt.nz — click the Login to myIR button in the top-right of the page, or go directly to the IRD login URL. Always type the address yourself or use a bookmark. Never follow a myIR login link from an email or text message claiming to be from IRD — phishing scams that mimic the myIR login page are common, especially around tax refund season.

You can also log in from the IRD mobile app (iOS App Store / Google Play, search for "IR Inland Revenue"). The app uses the same username and password as the web portal and supports Face ID / fingerprint login once you've signed in once.

Step-by-step: logging in to myIR

1. Go to ird.govt.nz and click Login to myIR (top right). 2. Enter your user ID — this is the username you chose when you registered. It is not your IRD number and not your email address (unless you chose your email as your user ID). 3. Enter your password. 4. Complete the two-factor check — IRD will send a one-time code by text message or email, or prompt you on the IRD mobile app if you've set it up as your second factor. 5. You are now on your myIR home page, showing your income tax, KiwiSaver, student loan (if any), Working for Families, and secure mail sections.

Can't log in? Common problems and fixes

"Your user ID or password is incorrect."

  • Check that caps lock is off. User IDs and passwords are case-sensitive.
  • If you're using a password manager, make sure it's filling the myIR portal, not a phishing lookalike. The address bar must show ird.govt.nz.
  • Use the Forgot user ID or Forgot password links on the login page. IRD will email or text a recovery code to the contact details on file.

Two-factor code hasn't arrived.

  • Text codes can take 1–2 minutes. Check your mobile signal.
  • Make sure the phone number or email on your myIR account is still current. If you've changed number and haven't updated it, phone IRD on 0800 227 774 to verify your identity and reset the contact details.
  • If you use the IRD app as your second factor, open the app and tap Approve. If the prompt never appears, check notifications are enabled for the app.

"Your account is locked."

  • Accounts lock after multiple failed password attempts. Wait 30 minutes and try again, or reset your password.
  • If your account is locked for identity or security reasons (not just wrong password), you'll need to phone IRD.

"We don't recognise these details." / No myIR account yet.

  • You may have an IRD number but not a myIR account — these are separate. See "Registering for the first time" below.

Session expires too fast.

  • myIR logs you out after 20 minutes of inactivity for security. This cannot be extended. Save anything important as you go.

Registering for the first time

To create a myIR account you need:

  • Your IRD number (8 or 9 digits — on any IRD letter, payslip, or in the IRD app if you already use it).
  • An email address you can access.
  • A New Zealand mobile number (preferred) for two-factor codes.

Go to ird.govt.nz and click Register for myIR. Enter your IRD number, date of birth, and contact details. IRD will then ask a few identity questions based on their records (e.g. your current address, recent income source, or a previous tax detail). Once verified, you choose a user ID and password and you're in — no postal delay in most cases. If IRD can't verify you online, they may send a letter with an activation code.

What you can do once you're logged in

  • Income tax: view your end-of-year income tax assessment, see any refund coming to you or tax to pay, and pay IRD directly.
  • IR3 tax returns: file an IR3 if you have self-employment, rental, overseas, or other untaxed income. Due 7 July (or later via a registered tax agent).
  • Tax code: check and change your PAYE tax code at any time — useful if you start a new job, pick up a second job, or your student loan status changes.
  • Student loan: check your balance, see repayments made via PAYE, and make voluntary repayments.
  • KiwiSaver: see contributions, change your contribution rate, or check your provider.
  • Working for Families: apply for WfF Tax Credits or update your estimated family income.
  • Secure mail: send IRD a message (faster than phoning) and read any letters they've sent you.

Use these free calculators alongside myIR

Before you log in to myIR — or to double-check a figure you see on your assessment — the following calculators work without a login and use the same 2025-26 and 2026-27 IRD rates.
